The PhD by Papers format is an option for all Birmingham Philosophy PhD students and is not a separate course of study. Simply apply for the Philosophy PhD as normal. If you are interested in our postgraduate research programmes in Philosophy, please have a look at our research areas and contact the departmental Director of Research Admissions.
The best way to get a sense of the tuition fees you will actually pay for a US PhD is to look up a few programmes in your subject and compare their prices. Just make sure you’re comparing the same thing: some universities will list fees per year, whereas others may list fees per semester or per credit.
In most faculties a candidate is expected to have completed one year of postgraduate study, normally on a research preparation master's course, prior to starting a PhD. Completion normally requires three or four years of full-time study, or at least five years of part-time study, including a probationary period.
